You do not need to spend money to make a finished, release-ready track. Every DAW includes decent stock plugins, and the free tools below cover most of what beginners buy paid plugins for. We checked each one on its official page on 25 October 2026, including the catch: an account, an email address or a feature that only the paid version has.

If you only install five

  • Vital for synth sounds.
  • TDR Nova for EQ, including dynamic EQ.
  • TDR Kotelnikov for clean compression.
  • Valhalla Supermassive for reverb and delay.
  • Youlean Loudness Meter to check loudness before you release.

VST, VST3, AU, AAX: which do you need?

  • Windows: VST3 works in almost every DAW. AAX is only for Pro Tools.
  • Mac: Logic Pro and GarageBand use AU; most other DAWs use VST3.
  • Linux: look for VST3, CLAP or LV2. REAPER and Bitwig support Linux.

Install tips

  1. Install to your system's default plugin folder unless your DAW says otherwise.
  2. Rescan plugins in your DAW's settings.
